Using it in webmail
Open a supported webmail page and LinkGuard compares the links in the message automatically. There is nothing to set up.
| Service | Address |
|---|---|
| Gmail | mail.google.com |
| Naver Mail | mail.naver.com |
| Daum Mail | mail.daum.net |
| Outlook | outlook.live.com, office.com |
| Yahoo Mail | mail.yahoo.com |
What you see
Links in a message body or list preview that meet a condition get a red wavy underline.
An underline appears in five cases.
- Lookalike characters: the address contains characters that look like others
- Lookalike spelling (for example
paypa1.com) - Listed domain inside subdomain (for example
amazon.com.example.xyz) - Shown and actual address differ
- Mixed scripts: letters from different scripts mixed within one domain name
No underline only means none of these five applied. It is not a statement about the site.
Link wrapping in Gmail and Outlook
Gmail wraps links in a redirect address of the form google.com/url?q=, and Outlook wraps them in its own link-rewriting address. Compared as is, you would only ever see the redirect service.
LinkGuard unwraps these addresses, takes out the real destination, and compares that. The "Received address" row in the hover card shows the unwrapped destination.
What is not supported
Mail apps such as Apple Mail and desktop Outlook are not supported. A browser extension can only read pages inside the browser. Open the same message in webmail to check it.
